It is getting close to Memorial Day as I write this. For many Americans, that means the start of summer and spending time with family. For some, it is just an excuse to sleep in late on a Monday. Others believe it is about much more than that. It is a time to remember people who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It is the Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, Brothers, and Sisters who volunteered to support and defend the constitution and will never return. The families who are left with nothing more that pictures and citations on a wall. The people who gave us the freedom to love our families, the freedom to speak our minds, the freedom to vote. People like an Army Major I had the good fortune of knowing who was killed in Iraq on Memorial Day 5 years ago.
We did not serve together, and I only knew him for a short amount of time. But even in that short amount of time he made an impact on me, and everyone he met. He could walk into any room and instantly become the life of the party. He could change the entire outlook of someone he met after 5 short minutes. He made every day of his life count. When I think about his sacrifice, I feel like I owe it to him to be a better person and do the same.
Think about what you are doing in your life. Are you making an impact? Are you making every day count? Or are you just going through the motions reacting to what comes your way. I feel like we owe it to every veteran who is never coming home to Make An Impact and Make It Count every day.
